Hillwood is in the central north of Tasmania on the east bank of the Tamar River. Located between Launceston and George Town, Hillwood offers visitors access to seasonal fruits through farm-gate sales, a popular cafe on the waterfront and good picnic areas in a beautiful and peaceful river setting.
Hillwood consists of over 300 properties. About two-thirds of the area of Hillwood is rural resource zone – that is, land which is used for agricultural purposes. It includes fruit farms, hobby farms and other agriculture. The waterfront is highly sought after for housing.
Hillwood has a football ground – home to the Hillwood Sharks, a Memorial Hall, fire station and a pontoon popular for fishing. It does not have its own school, post office, church, general store or medical services. Some groceries and meals are available at various businesses. Postal services are available at the Mount Direction Petrol Station. The nearest medical services are at George Town or Launceston.
Information about population growth and composition of Hillwood may be found on page 4 of the Hillwood Structure Plan.
