Australia Day Celebration – Hosted by the George Town Council
Please join us on this special occasion as we pay tribute to our Nation and give recognition to our community members who have given valuable contributions to the community over a period of years.
Australia Day Awards will be presented to :
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community Event of the Year
In attendance will be Council’s Australia Day Ambassador, Jo Palmer.
Jo Palmer presents the one hour program “Southern Cross Nightly News” in Tasmania. She is a former Miss Tasmania and in 1993 was awarded Miss Australia, the first Tasmanian woman to win the prestigious title since 1927. In 1993 Jo was awarded “Tasmanian of the Year” for her charity work in particular her work with people with disabilities. She is a prominent speaker at numerous Tasmanian charity and community events and is the Ambassador for a number of organisations including Tasmanian Clown Doctors, Care Australia “Walk in her Shoes” and National Reading Ambassador and has also been involved as an intrastate Ambassador for Tourism
Jo is also the Ambassador and face of “Give Me Five for Kids”, the major fundraising arm of Southern Cross TV which has contributed over one million dollar to the children’s wards of Tasmanian public hospitals over the
past six years. She has recently also accepted an Ambassadorial role with the City Mission, working with children who have experienced trauma through “Inside Out for Kids”.
At the conclusion of the formal proceedings, guests are invited to enjoy a traditional Australian Day breakfast.
The formal ceremonies will be followed by a Family Day and Mini Olympics in Regent Square. Free activities will include live music, giant slides, face painting, badge making, mini Olympic events for all the family (inclusive of opening & closing ceremony and medal presentations).

Hillwood Clean-up Day
Hillwood has a Clean-Up Day every year in spring, when we tackle litter and the spread of bone-seed plants in one go. Everyone is welcome to help and it is very rewarding.

Hillwood ANZAC Day Dawn Service
The Hillwood ANZAC Day Dawn Service is held each year at 6am on ANZAC Day at the Hillwood Fire Station, with breakfast held afterwards at Hillwood War Memorial Hall. The event is organised by a sub-committee of the Hillwood Progress Association.
The ANZAC Day Service is led by Ian Wheeler and is sometimes attended by a local choir. Anyone who would like to lay a wreath for family or for a group is invited to do so. Just register with the appropriate person on the day. Also if anyone has any memorabilia to display, please bring it along.
Volunteers are sought each year to help cook, serve or wash up at the breakfast.
